Silversea's first hybrid-power ship to be named Silver Nova

The first ship in Silversea Cruises’ Project Evolution venture will be named Silver Nova.

Construction of the Silver Nova has begun at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Silversea plans to take delivery of the ship in summer 2023.

Travel advisors and members of Silversea’s loyalty program, the Venetian Society, will have pre-sale access starting Dec. 16. General sales will open on Jan. 6.

The Nova will run on hybrid power, using liquefied natural gas as its main fuel and supplementing that with a fuel cell system and batteries. At select ports, the Silver Nova will be able to turn off its main generators and power the ship with fuel cells and batteries, resulting in an emissions-free operation while in port, Silversea said.

Silversea CEO Roberto Martinoli said its Nova-class ships “represent a significant investment in unprecedented technological solutions.”

“They support our mission to preserve the planet without compromising on comfort or luxury,” Martinoli said.

Silversea is promoting the Silver Nova as one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built. The ship will be 54,700 gross tons with a capacity for 728 guests. The crew-to-guest ratio will be 1 to 1.3.
