States change border rules to Victoria

Two states have been quick to respond to the fresh Covid situation in Victoria.

Western Australia and South Australia have upgraded their border measures for Victoria after nine new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Wednesday.

The first case was a primary close contact and was in isolation, while the new cases stemmed from the removalists and a family who had returned from NSW.

Victorian health authorities are racing to contact anyone who may have crossed paths with them.

Four of the new cases are residents on the third floor of the Ariele Apartments in Maribyrnong, which has been in lockdown since Monday evening.

The elderly parents of one of the residents, a man in his 60s, also tested positive. The couple, aged 89 and 90, live in Craigieburn.

The other new case is a man in his 30s who was at the Coles supermarket in Craigieburn, likely at the same time as one of the family of four who had returned from Sydney.

And the latest is a teacher from Bacchus Marsh who tested positive on Wednesday night.

In response, WA Premier Mark McGowan announced state health authorities were upgrading their border controls in response to the growing infections.

He said Victoria was now classified a “low-risk” jurisdiction.

New arrivals, who have visited an exposure site, will now need to spend 14 days in self-quarantine and be Covid-tested on arrival within 48 hours, and again on day 11.

“I understand these changes may be disruptive for WA families, however our strengthened border controls are an important tool for us to keep this dangerous virus out of WA,” Mr McGowan said.

Anyone who has visited an exposure site in Victoria and is already in Western Australia has been ordered to get tested immediately and self-quarantine from the day of exposure.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens also announced similar measures on Wednesday evening.

He said from midnight people arriving from Victoria would be subject to ‘level one’ testing.

“That means you must have a test within 24 hours of arriving in South Australia and you are not permitted to go to a high-risk location, for example, an aged-care facility until you have a negative result,” he said.

“We are also requiring all freight drivers who are arriving in South Australia to produce evidence of a negative Covid test that has been undertaken within the last 48 hours on arrival.

“We will be meeting again tomorrow to talk about whether or not the evolving situation requires any further steps.”

Meanwhile NSW recorded 97 new cases on Wednesday, with 24 of those infectious in the community.
