American Express enables cardholders to buy flight protection: Travel Weekly

American Express Travel, No. 8 on Travel Weekly’s 2021 Power List, is offering U.S. card members the opportunity to purchase a new benefit, Trip Cancel Guard, which offers up to 75% reimbursement on nonrefundable flight costs.

The benefit only applies to flights booked on AmexTravel.com, and the flight must be canceled at least two calendar days before departure.

According to American Express, Trip Cancel Guard is not insurance. It can be purchased in addition to other travel insurance.

American Express Travel’s 2022 Global Travel Trends report found that 90% of respondents agreed they needed to be flexible as travel plans might change. Meanwhile, 74%, are willing to book a trip this year even if it needs to be canceled or modified later.

“People are eager to travel, and as demand increases there is a greater need to plan ahead,” American Express Travel president Audrey Hendley said in a statement. “At the same time, a level of uncertainty still exists in the everchanging travel environment.”

Trip Cancel Guard, she said, offers consumers “the confidence to book flights with the flexibility to cancel for any reason if their plans change.”
