UK’s ‘best value hotel chain’ has ‘exquisite’ heritage properties

A new survey by Which? has revealed Britons’ favourite UK hotel chain when it comes to “value”. Though the budget offering from Premier Inn and hub by Premier Inn scooped second and third place, with rooms often coming in at under £100, slightly pricier Hotel Indigo took the top spot and was crowned the favourite.

Hotel Indigo, owned by the IHG chain, offers a different look and feel at each of its locations, with many housed in heritage buildings.

Hotel Indigo has 18 locations across the UK, many of which are housed in beautiful heritage buildings, with deals starting under £100 per night.

Hotel Indigo has 18 locations across the UK, many of which are located in historic UK towns and cities including Kensington and Paddington in London, Durham, Edinburgh, Bath, Stratford Upon Avon and one of its newer additions, Exeter.

In Glasgow, Hotel Indigo has taken up residency in a former power station, it calls a Georgian terrace home in Bath and in Exeter, guests can visit the recently refurbished hotel nestled in a Victorian department store.

As such, there are nods to the building and the area’s heritage dotted throughout communal areas. For example, the reception desk at the Exeter location is a haberdashery cabinet displaying 1930s beauty products, while the lift is decorated with handwritten receipts.

Though the average price of a stay at a Hotel Indigo location is £130 per night, it scored an average of 77 percent for overall value by customers.

Customers scored the hotel five stars for cleanliness, four stars for the bedrooms and five stars for the bathrooms. Bed comfort and communal areas and decoration also received four out of five stars.

Overall, guests said that the description matches the reality, with five stars. Sharing their experience to TripAdvisor, guests who had previously stayed at the Exeter location described it as “exquisite” and “stunning”.

Former guest Amy left a review in October 2023, describing the hotel as “absolutely exquisite”. She added: “The room was stunning, absolutely beautiful! The view was amazing and made the suite feel much bigger.”

The Edinburgh location has been given a 4.5-star rating on Tripadvisor. In a recent TripAdvisor review, former guest Ellie described the hotel as a “hidden gem”. She added: “Fantastic location, amazing rooms, extra treats provided.”

Guests were also impressed by the helpful staff, great breakfasts and city centre locations. And experts from Which? note: “Hotel Indigo earned four and five stars almost across the board, and it’s still a bargain compared with most other comparable moderately priced hotels, such as Hilton and Radisson Blu.”
