TUI cancellations came as a surprise for many Brits hopeful of getting on a plane this summer, especially amid new and relaxed travel rules coming into effect in just a number of days. As confirmed by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, Brits who’ve had a double dose of the Covid jab won’t need to quarantine on return from amber list countries from July 19 – as long as the vaccine’s been in effect for more than two weeks. Travellers will still have to present a negative PCR test when they get back to England.

The Government has also reviewed its international travel list, updating the green, amber and red categories for destinations on Wednesday.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted: “From 4am Monday July 19 Bulgaria & Hong Kong will be added to the green list and Croatia & Taiwan the green watchlist of destinations.

“Please check latest travel advice before you travel as countries and territories may have extra requirements before you get there.

“We’re also moving the Balearic Islands & British Virgin Islands to the amber list – previously on the green watchlist.

“Also, from 19/07 (July 19) if you’re fully vaccinated in the UK you can return to England from amber countries and territories without needing to quarantine.

“Four countries and territories will join the red list to safeguard our domestic vaccine rollout.

“We will keep these measures under review and be guided by the latest data.”

The Transport Secretary added that the Government “won’t hesitate” to enforce new action “if needed to protect public health”. 

Is your holiday affected by TUI cancellations?

Despite the positive update from the Government, TUI pulled the plug on numerous flights and holidays until July 31 at the very earliest.

Many of the destinations listed by the travel provider are on the red list, such as Turkey, the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates.

A TUI spokesperson said: “We want to offer our customers flexibility and choice this summer, so where borders are open and FCDO advice allows travel, we will operate to those destinations as planned.

“We are continually reviewing our holiday programme and can collations in line with the Government updates every three weeks, with the next update expected on July 14.”

TUI also confirmed it would be cancelling a number of trips to Greece and Spain islands throughout July.

This list of cancellations includes:

July 19 – Alicante (Spain)
July 20 – Malaga, (Spain)
July 21 – Cyprus, Kefalonia (Greece), Jamaica
July 22 – Skiathos (Greece), Marrakesh (Morocco)
July 23 – Fuertaventura (Canary Islands)
July 24 – Preveza (Greece)
July 26 – Santorini (Greece), Chania (Crete)
July 28 – La Palma (Canary Islands)

Those who have had their holidays cancelled can opt for a full refund or move their trip to a later date.
