In honour of Afternoon Tea Week (9-15 August) Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences, based in London, is honouring the famous villain The Queen of Hearts that will win over any Lewis Carroll fan. Guests can fall down the rabbit hole of savoury treats and scones that are placed on fine china plates, decorated with original illustrations from the novel by Sir John Tenniel.

Served in the hotel’s newest restaurant, Kona pays homage to its Victorian townhouse decor, with an elegant grey and azure interior design.

Those who fancy sampling the sweet treats ranging including a redcurrant and chocolate Battenburg be presented upon a glass checkerboard.

Other menu items that are served by the finest butlers in the business include a strawberry and chocolate-shaped pocket watch macaron and sandwiches that resemble playing cards.

But the all-important Queen of Hearts playing card will be spotted on every table, alongside a bespoke-designed top hat centerpiece elevated above the table.

The Queen of Hearts sweet menu includes:

– Off With Their Heads: standing tall on the plate will be the Queen of Hearts herself, recreated as a banana moelleux with a raspberry crémeux dress

– No White Roses: a Victorian red velvet cupcake topped with the iconic ‘half painted’ roses and chocolate ganache

– Tea Party at Six: a Dark chocolate hat, a fitting tribute to the Mad Hatter

– A Orange semolina cake, adorned with fresh strawberries and blackberries in a chess-like formation

Vegetarian and vegan versions of this tea are also available upon request 48 hours in advance, costing £45.

If you really want to experience Taj 51 to the full, diners can pair their tea experience with a spa treatment as part of the ‘Spa in the City’ package from £150.

A review of the afternoon tea experience gave five out five stars on TripAdvisor, saying: “Quite simply the best Afternoon Tea that we have experienced, and there have been a few!

“Very attentive & professional staff. Based on the Alice in Wonderland books the overall presentation & attention to detail of the themed place settings was amazing and the food flavours were sublime.”

Another person who recently visited also agreed, who said: ” This is the best themed party I have been to – the food was delicious and delightful.

“Staff extremely attentive and helpful – I can’t wait to get back again for another afternoon tea – fantastic value for such a great experience 10 out of 10.”

Nestled just a short walk away from Buckingham Palace and St. James’ Park, what could be more quintessentially British than this!

The Queen of Hearts tea is available with sittings from Wednesday to Friday midday and 2pm, and sittings on Saturday and Sunday at midday, 2pm and 4pm.

Don’t worry if you can’t find a table to celebrate Afternoon Tea Week, there is still seating you can reserve until the end of year.
