The incredible life-size LEGO Toyota Supra – that can be driven

The instruction book must have been epic.

Lego designers have built a life-size Toyota GR Supra using 477,303 bricks. And it’s even drivable – though its top speed – 17mph – is some way off the 155mph limit of the real thing.

The team behind the build, comprising 21 model builders and two mechanics, invested a total of 5,400 hours (225 days) in creating it.

According to Toyota, the replica, built in the Czech Republic, is made from real Lego bricks, but has an electric motor and drivetrain and its seat, steering wheel and pedals were sourced from an actual Toyota GR Supra car.

It also has a metal frame as a base and a set of original wheels, and the exterior lights, indicators and doors are fully functional.

The project was a hit with Lego fans, with one Twitter user writing: ‘That’s insane! Looks identical too’

The project, in honour of the Supra’s 35th anniversary, was a big hit with Lego fans, with one Twitter user writing: ‘That is awesome. I would love to see the build manual for this.’

‘When and where can we buy this?’ wondered another, and a third said: ‘That’s insane! Looks identical too.’

The vehicle was unveiled at Legoland Japan, where it will be on display until October 11, parked outside the City Shop.

Lego unveiled a 299-piece miniature version of the car in June of this year, as part of its Speed Champions Summer 2021 series.

Though the Lego Toyota GR Supra is in a class of its own, this isn’t the first time the toy manufacturer has created a life-size car that runs.

‘That is awesome, I would love to see the build manual for this,’ one Twitter user remarked

In August 2018, Lego unveiled a working model of the Bugatti Chiron, which can accelerate to a top speed of 12mph, made using over a million Lego and Lego Technic pieces and 2,300 toy motors.

Britons with an appetite for viewing enormous things made out of the famous plastic bricks should visit Legoland Windsor where they can see the spectacular new Lego Mythica: World of Mythical Creatures land.

The multi-million-pound attraction features the Fire and Ice Freefall, which stands at 13 metres tall (42ft, or the equivalent of 325 Lego Minifigures). This drop ride ‘is defended by Lego Mythica Guardian Crystal Flame’.

Chief Model Maker Paula Laughton gets up close to Maximus, who features in the Flight of the Sky Lion ride

Then there’s Hydra’s Challenge, which is ‘an exhilarating water ride that is protected by Lego Mythica guardian Duo’.

Guests can also see first-hand ‘the epic scale’ of the ‘lead attraction’ – the Flight of the Sky Lion – which stands at over 25 metres (82ft) tall.

The Flight of the Sky Lion is a 4D experience that Legoland Windsor says excites the senses with wind, mist and even smell. It’s an attraction that is synchronised with an animated film ‘to fully immerse families in the world of Lego Mythica’.
