‘Speculator’ French city is named ‘cheapest’ destination to visit for a holiday

Wintertime is the ideal time to book somewhere cheap and cheerful to travel, as this “gorgeous” French city is perfect for anyone wishing to take a break somewhere beautiful.

If you are looking to explore France without it being overcrowded without tourists or making a dent in your wallet, then you should consider Lille, France as it has now been named one of the “cheapest city breaks in Europe.”

According to the latest data from the Post Office, Lillie is in the top ten most affordable Western European cities to visit and is one of the cheapest places to visit when it comes to visiting cultural landmarks, such as museums, art galleries, theatres or local historical sites.

Lille is situated in northern France has is known for its beauty site with its 17th brick houses, cobbled street and massive central square, Grand Place, which makes it definitely worth visiting.

On social media, Lillie has often been remarked by visitors the city is one of the most underrated destinations to visit in France despite having plenty to do in the winter.

Anika, a travel destination expert, posted a video on Lille and said: “Nobody is talking about this adorable French city.”

She added it is the most “gorgeous” place to visit in both the autumn and winter and added: “I’ve heard their Christmas market is also spectacular.”

Lilie is known for its enchanting Christmas market which opens at this time of year in the city centre, Grand Place. Not only does the city come alive with incredible festive decorations such as the city’s massive Christmas tree and colourful lights to enjoy, but outside of the market stalls there are also pony rides and a Ferris wheel which offers incredible views of the city,

There is also a Friday night concert at the Christmas market to enjoy every week the market is on, which starts today on the 17th of November until the 30th of December.

There will also be many stalls selling local food and drink such as mulled wine, gingerbread and chocolate praline.

However, Lilie is worth a visit simply for its French food as it has a rich culinary scene in the wintertime with its hearty local specialities, such as carbonnade flamande (beef stewed in beer) and potjevleesch (a meat terrine) which are the perfect comfort food to warm yourself up to.

Lilie is also rich in culture as it hosts the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum) which is one of the largest museums in France at holds many famous paintings, such as The Birth of Venus by Amaury Duval as well as many other incredible paintings and sculptures.

There is also the quirky La Piscine Musée (Swimming Pool Museum) which is located in a former indoor swimming pool and has many beautiful art pieces as well as an art deco interior.

You can also the historic Citadel, a beautiful old fortress surrounded by a beautiful large park and is right next to the city’s zoo, which is located on the Citadel grounds.

Lille is accessible by the Eurostar and is only a one and a half hours away from London, and CNN Traveller has said flights can be booked to the city for around £40 and also has many cheap places to stay.

CNN said: “Mama Shelter Lille is a colourful haven very close to both of the city’s main train stations with rooms from £79, and there are a host of locally revered restaurants nearby.

“Head to Rue des Bouchers for cute bistrot vibes – Chez Brigitte has a lunch menu offering three courses for €29, or visit some of the local markets for stalls and trucks selling mouthwatering dishes and local-inspired cuisine.”

There is so much to do and plenty to see in this beautiful city, which is why Lilie is a bargain for anyone seeking a unbelievably cheap destination this winter.
