Spain has confirmed today that tourists will not have to wear face masks while sunbathing on the beach or swimming in the sea or pool. The news will likely be a great relief to those worried about how the rule would impact their Spanish holiday this summer. However, beachgoers will still have to wear face masks when walking to the beach as well as walking along it.

Details of the face mask rule have been clarified by Spain’s Interterritorial Council following a meeting yesterday prompted by confusion over mask-wearing and a suggestion by the Spanish government that masks had to be compulsory on the beach, even when sunbathing.

The rule prompted a barrage of criticism, with tourism leaders claiming it would put tourists off from choosing Spain as their destination.

Potential holidaymakers were also concerned, fretting that wearing a mask while sunbathing would leave them with “two-tone faces.”

The new regulations say a mask will not be required in the case of individual sport exercise.
