Thailand is an extremely popular destination for solo travellers, with over a million backpackers from the UK and Ireland visiting every single year.
With it’s beautiful beaches, active nightlife and rich culture, it’s easy to see why so many people take an extended trip there.
However, as its popularity has grown, the places and experiences on offer have become more talked about on social media, and not all of them live up to the hype.
One solo traveller has shared the four things she thinks are overrated in Thailand.

7-Eleven ham and cheese toasties
First up, is something that’s not exclusive to Thailand, but has been hugely popularized by inflluencers – it’s the ham and cheese toasties from 7-Eleven.
The travel pro told viewers: ‘Number one, I feel like I’m gonna get s*** for this but 7-Eleven ham and cheese toasties.
‘They’re foul, they’re not good at all, they were so overhyped on TikTok with people saying ‘you’ll live off them’ and’ they’ll become a staple of your diet’, ‘you’re not even a real traveller if you don’t eat ham and cheese toasties’.
‘She repeated ‘They’re foul. No one I knew liked them’.
Another content creator admitted in the comments ‘I post about the sandwiches but I don’t eat them myself’.
Maya Bay
Chloe continued: ‘Number two is Maya Bay – honestly, so overrated.
‘I mean if you just type in ‘Maya Bay overcrowded’ on TikTok, you’ll see what I mean.

‘It’s literally just a beach and because you can’t swim in the water, it’s just a beach that you lie on.
‘But then you’re surrounded by people because it’s so overcrowded’.
The iconic location was made famous by the 2000 movie ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio – despite being small, it attracts masses of tourists every day.
Before it’s reopening last year, it was inundated with 5,000 tourists a day and had to close for four months to allow the coral to grow.
Under the new measures, boats are not allowed to enter the bay with drivers having to drop off passengers at a nearby pier and only eight speedboats are allowed to dock at one time.
Only one visit per hour is allowed and numbers are capped at 300 people per ’round’, from 10am to 4pm.
Commenters were in agreement, writing ‘100% agree with Maya Bay don’t get me wrong it was beautiful but I couldn’t get my head around paying nearly a tenner just to walk on a beach’ and ‘I thought i was the only one esp maya bay it was packed!!’.

Pai
Third on the TikToker’s list is Pai, a small town in the Mae Hong Soon Province of northern Thailand.
She said ‘The next overrated thing is Pai. I feel like I’m gonna offend some people cause some people love Pai so much.
‘I did not rate it, none of the activities apart from tipsy tubing really stood out for me and let’s be honest, tipsy tubing isn’t the most cultural of activities.
‘We also found Pai to be quite cliquey as well. I think because people end up staying there for months at a time, people kind of form their own groups and stick to them’.
She concluded ‘It’s just not really my vibe,’ which some commenters agreed with.
One traveller wrote: ‘FINALLYYY someone else who disliked Pai!!!! I didn’t rate it either’.
Another chimed in with, ‘Pai is overrated, I’ve just come back from Pai and I’ve got to say that it depends on the hostel/ the people you meet,’ meanwhile someone else penned ‘I HATED pai!! I thought I was the only one, 0 culture in that city it was like I was in a backpacker resort in Europe’.
Someone else agreed: ‘Completely agree with your thoughts on Pai! Unsure if I went with high expectations but it was so disappointing for how much people seemingly love it’.
The Full Moon party
Finally, Chloe wasn’t a huge fan of the Full Moon Party – another experience that’s very popular among tourists
It’s one of the worlds biggest parties and is attended by more than 30,000 people – revellers dance to electronic music, with DJ’s from across the world performing

Finally, Chloe wasn’t a huge fan of the Full Moon Party – another experience that’s very popular among tourists.
It’s one of the worlds biggest parties, which began in the 1980’s, and is attended by more than 30,000 people – revellers dance to electronic music, with DJ’s from across the world performing.
The festival like extravaganza takes place on the island of Koh Phangan and is notable for it’s buckets of booze and neon theme.
However, Chloe advises, ‘ Don’t get me wrong it was good, I dunno, I’ve just had better nights out in Thailand.
‘Everything was just so overpriced: the accommodation, the drinks, the food prices, there are definitely better nights out in Thailand’.
She also warned ‘I know that spiking is really prevalent at the Full Moon party as well so just from a safety concern as well, it’s just not that good’.
The solo traveller concluded the clip by asking ‘Let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these and are there any other experiences in Thailand that you find overhyped?’
Viewers chimed in with ‘Full Moon party has to be on the list’ and ‘yess I think I’m not gonna spend too much time in Pai, and skipping the full moon parties, just don’t seem too much like my thing’.
However, some people disagreed, adding: ‘I love the toasties…’ and ‘We left for Maya Bay at 5:50am for the sunrise and were the first ones there’.
