Ryanair passengers issued check-in warning – or risk a £55 fee at the airport

Any UK holidaymakers booked onto a Ryanair flight this week have been issued a major travel warning.

The airline has said that passengers need to check in online before they reach the airport – or they’ll be handed a fee.

That means if you prefer to check in at the desk when you arrive you’ll be charged an additional £55 penalty when you fly with Ryanair.

However, the Ryanair website and app will both be down for 11 hours today and tomorrow, the air carrier warned.

So, passengers will be unable to check-in online between 6pm this evening, November 8, and 5am tomorrow, November 9.

Anyone flying in the next few days must therefore check-in outside of those times, but before they reach the airport to avoid the £55 fine.

In a statement, Ryanair said: “Due to planned maintenance, Ryanair website/app will be temporarily down from 6pm, Tuesday 8 to 5am, Wednesday 9.

"Customers who are due to fly during this 11-hour period should check-in online before 6pm on Tuesday, 8 November."

It is free to check-in for your flight on the website – and you can do so up to 24 hours before your flight.

Flexi Plus passengers can check-in 60 days before departure.

It means that if you do not check in before you arrive at the airport, even if this is because the site is down, you will be charged.

The check-in fees are a standard part of Ryanair's policy, but that hasn't stopped some holidaymakers from being caught out.

So if you’re flying soon remember to check in before 6pm today!

A number of budget airlines charge passengers who want to check-in at the airport, but that's not the only thing holidaymakers need to check before travelling.

Airlines such as TUI, easyJet and Jet2 have varying hand luggage rules on what you can bring for free, or you may need to pay to check your bags into the hold.

The Daily Star contacted Ryanair for comment.
