When royal family members jet off on holiday it’s often not to one of their own private properties – though you can stay at Balmoral for just £15.80 per person per night.

Like the rest of us, they have to book a room in a hotel – and there are some stand out favourites preferred by the King, his sons and their wives as well as royals who have sadly passed such as Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana..

We've rounded up some of the top hotel choices loved by the late Queen, the current Princess of Wales and even the Sussexes.

And, the hotels preferred by the monarchy reflect all the glamour and glitz seen in other parts of their lives – from incredible views of Hyde and Central Park to lavish royal suites.

Check out their favourite bookable properties below…

Grosvenor House, London

Before marrying Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, often stayed at the Grosvenor House apartments by Jumeirah Living in Mayfair when filming for Suits.

In a 2015 interview, she noted: “It's my favourite property I've ever stayed at.

"I'm very fortunate that I have the luxury of staying at so many amazing places, but the service, and being able to stay somewhere where it feels like home, where every need is anticipated, it's all fantastic.

“I really love it here and I'm happy to be staying.”

The gorgeous hotel with views across Hyde Park offers rooms in October from £376 per night ranging up to a whopping £1,427 a night.

The Goring, London

In 2013, the Goring became the only hotel in the world to get the Royal Warrant.

The late Queen was a big fan of the stunning five-star spot which is just yards from Buckingham Palace.

Having opened in 1910 the Goring is still run by the family who built it and has been stayed in by the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II.

Plus, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, stayed at the Goring the night before her wedding to Prince William.

Prince Harry and Meghan also visited the hotel before they left for the United States.

There are 69 rooms and suites to choose from – ranging from £445 a night to £8,500 a night for the Royal Suite.

The Rockhouse, Jamaica

Another one of the Duchess of Sussex’s favourite hotels, this beach spot in the Caribbean was recommended by Meghan on her former blog.

The gorgeous, spread out hotel sits upon blue water with each room on an unusual rocky outcrop.

There’s a huge swimming pool with views out over the water and tropical gardens too. Plus, incredible fresh seafood at the resort's restaurants.

Double rooms start from $150 (£132) a night.

The Carlyle, New York City

This American hotspot, a Rosewood Hotel, has been beloved by generations of British royals when staying across the pond.

Hello! claims The Carlyle was Princess Diana’s favourite hotel – she chose to sleep in the Royal Suite on Floor 22 – while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stayed there in 2021.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales also visited in 2014 and King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla stopped by in 20015.

The hotel has 189 rooms and offers Central Park views – though rooms can cost £1,000 or more per night.

Drake Hotel, Chicago

Princess Diana stayed in this hotel in the Windy City back in 1996 while fundraising for cancer research.

Guests can re-create her memorable stay at the Drake using their "Crowing a Lady" package – you'll even stay in the Princess Diana suite.

The luxury room has views over Lake Michigan and boasts 1,500 sq ft of space.

You can even dine on the same three-course meal that the people's Princess did – and request the extras she wanted from a Lifecycle bike to tonnes of mineral water.

Diana's signature is on show in the hotel's autograph book too.

However, the full package does cost a royal amount – $32,000 (£28,366) according to the Mirror.
