From Monday, March 29, Brits face fines of up to £5,000 for going on holiday abroad.
Currently, non-essential travel is banned due to the national lockdown – including all holidays and leisure trips internationally and in the UK.
It is hoped that Brits will be allowed to go on holiday abroad from May 17 as part of the government’s easing of lockdown restrictions.
However, with a third wave of coronavirus infections wreaking havoc in several places in Europe, experts have warned the travel ban could be in force longer than that.
From Monday the ban will be written into law when the Health Protection Regulations 2021 laws come into force.
According to the legal document: “The Regulations also impose restrictions on leaving the United Kingdom without a reasonable excuse (regulation 8)."
This means that no one can “leave England to travel to a destination outside the United Kingdom, or travel to, or be present at, an embarkation point for the purpose of travelling from there to a destination outside the United Kingdom” without a reasonable excuse.
So what counts as a valid reason for leaving the country?
