Pilot claims promise airline staff say about delays is often ‘rarely true’

Passengers on a flight might not realise what really happens behind the scenes of a journey.

When there's delays, cabin crew will try their absolute hardest to diffuse the situation and keep travellers calm.

But did you know that some of it might just be a lie?

One pilot has opened up about the promise often told to passengers who are facing delays on a flight.

Posting in a Reddit thread about flight secrets, they wrote: "There is very little we can actually do to 'make-up time'.

"The longer the flight, the more we can do, but still, we're talking 5-10 minutes, not an hour."

The responder was backed by another pilot Jim Richards who said flight attendants often strive to do this anyway.

He said in the New Zealand Herald: "With very few exceptions, we're always flying optimal routes and altitudes to get us to our destination in the minimum time and with minimal fuel burn.

"Wind is by far the biggest variable in these calculations."

Speaking of flight secrets, a cabin crew worker explained the scary reason why windows and tables are up for take off.

One person asked on the social media site: "Airline workers of Reddit: What are some secrets that airlines don't want the rest of us to know?"

In the replies, a cabin crew worker said: "Windows have to be up during take off and landing so emergency personnel can see into the aircraft if it crashes."

Someone else asked: "I've always heard that the reason that cabin lights get dimmed during take off and landing is so that your eyes are adjusted to the amount of light outside so you can see what you're doing in the event of a crash. Is there any truth to that?"

And another handy crew member responded: "Yes."
