  • The hotel will feature three restaurants and rooms and villas that are ‘adorned with Hello Kitty designs’

Pictures have been unveiled showing a brand-new Hello Kitty theme park that’s opening in 2024.

News of the ‘vibrant’ Sanya Hello Kitty Resort broke in 2018, but now renderings show the roller coasters and rides at the park, which will be built in the Haitang Bay area of China’s Hainan Province.

The 52-acre park will house China’s first Hello Kitty hotel, with 221 rooms and villas ‘adorned with Hello Kitty designs’, offering guests a ‘truly special and whimsical stay’.

Renderings have been released of the roller coasters and rides at the ‘vibrant’ Sanya Hello Kitty Resort

Kitty – created by Japanese company Sanrio in 1974 – is a cartoon girl (not a cat, as her name suggests) who lives in London with her parents and her twin sister, Mimmy, another character that’s beloved by fans.

One rendering shows a pink Hello Kitty roller coaster snaking around the park. Another artistic impression shows a bird’s-eye view of the park, with a giant purple castle, a volcano feature, and a Hello Kitty sphinx.

A line of pastel-coloured shops is seen in a third, with a florist dedicated to Sweetcoron – a popular Sanrio bumblebee character.

Meanwhile, the Sanya Hello Kitty Hotel, run by Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, will feature decor inspired by other ‘well-known and beloved’ Sanrio characters.

During their stay, guests can dine at the hotel’s three ‘signature’ restaurants, where special menus will be created to celebrate ‘special festivals’ throughout the year.

Other facilities include a bar, a themed ballroom, a swimming pool and a ‘state-of-the-art’ spa and fitness centre.

It’s promised there will be ‘enchanting interactive experiences’ in the hotel ‘brought to life by innovative design and technology’. Story-telling events that ‘appeal to Sanrio fans of all ages’ will also be on offer.

‘We believe that the hotel and Sanya Hello Kitty Resort will become icons in Hainan’s tourism landscape,’ says a statement

It seems there’s no stopping the ever-expanding world of Hello Kitty.

In 2015, a £210million park dedicated to the character officially opened in China’s Anji County, Zhejiang Province. In 2016, the Hello Kitty Bistro Bianco restaurant, with menu items such as cat-themed steaks and Hello Kitty label rosé, opened on Shanghai’s Nanjing Road.

Japan is home to two Hello Kitty theme parks – Harmonyland and Sanrio Puroland, the latter of which opened back in 1990. Back in 2012, Taiwanese airline Eva launched special Kitty-themed planes – though the service was temporarily suspended during the pandemic. And, 2018 saw the launch of Japan’s Hello Kitty bullet train.

Commenting on the Sanya Hello Kitty Resort park, Stephen Ho, president of Growth and Operations, Asia Pacific of Hyatt, said: ‘We look forward to bringing to life well-loved Sanrio characters in this exciting new project, which will retain a unique identity while providing the JdV by Hyatt brand’s signature guest experience that is inclusive, free-spirited and distinguished by heartfelt and joy-driven service.’

And Jeffery Pun, Chief Executive Officer of Keyestone Group, which is developing the resort, said: ‘As Keyestone Group continues to grow our hospitality portfolio across Greater China, we are excited to extend our collaboration with Hyatt. Sanya Hello Kitty Hotel will leverage our respective strengths in developing and managing world-class hospitality projects to offer guests a truly unique experience as they unwind and rejuvenate with their favourite Sanrio characters.

‘We believe that the hotel and Sanya Hello Kitty Resort will become icons in Hainan’s tourism landscape and enable us to tap the growing demand for high-quality travel experiences in this region.’
