My boss is furious I didn’t give my first class seat to her and left her stuck in economy – despite the fact I used my own credit card points for the upgrade
- The Reddit user was flying home from a conference and was not sat by his boss
- Upon landing she confronted him about his ‘lack of respect for protocol’
An employee faced a furious boss after flying with her on a company trip after he was offered a free upgrade to first class – and didn’t offer it to her.
The man, who was a frequent flyer with the airline and also had his own credit card with them, was offered the seat because of the flight points he had earned, leaving his boss stuck in economy, The Mirror reports.
In a Reddit post he described how he was on his way home from a conference but was seated separately from his boss.
But she was left fuming after she found out he got upgraded to a flight of luxury – leaving her behind.
He acknowledged that the company paid for his plane ticket, but stressed he was given the free upgrade due to the use of his personal credit card and travel.
The employee ran into trouble with his boss after he was given a free upgrade to first class, based on his frequent flyer points and use of his credit card, owned by the same company as the airline
But his boss, who was left stuck in economy, became angry and accused him of having a ‘lack of respect for protocol’
Describing the situation as ‘insane’, the anonymous user asked for others’ advice on whether he had acted reasonably.
He wrote: ‘After the flight, when we were collecting our bags she said she wanted to talk to me about my “lack of respect for protocol”.
‘She thinks that because the company paid for my original ticket, and she is more senior than me, I should’ve given her the first class seat.
‘I think this is absolutely insane. While the company paid for my seat, it’s my own personal credit card spending, and frequent travel that earned me the upgraded seat.
‘Is this some sort of corporate standard I’m not aware of?’
In the comments he clarified that his company ‘lets us use our miles, or personal money, to upgrade the economy tickets they purchase’ – making the objection from his boss all the more controversial.
The vast majority of Reddit posters were in complete agreement with the employee.
Several users suggested he should report it to HR, with one advising him to describe the incident while cushioning the complaint by asking whether there are protocols he should be aware of in future.
He responded: ‘This is a really helpful suggestion. Thank you! She has retaliated against other employees who have raised concerns about her attitude with HR before, so this tact feels a little more comfortable to me than an outright complaint.’
A second wrote: ‘The entitlement of your boss is astounding.’
A third added: ‘Your boss needs to get a reality check.’
One user, who identified themselves as a ‘HR manager’, told the employee: ‘No employee is entitled to another employees personal rewards.
‘I had a general manager who traveled a lot of his job, he used his personal credit card to pay for rooms.
‘He always used the same hotel and amassed huge awards. Those are his to keep and use. He was reimbursed for the rooms by our company but he booked and paid for them originally.
‘[Your]company paid for the original ticket but the upgrade was a personal reward. Not a company reward.’
