While Morocco has always been an attractive winter sun destination, the country’s World Cup success is set to give it a further boost. The Moroccan team reached the semi-finals of the tournament, becoming the first African team to do so.

Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor said that winter holiday bookings had surged from the UK this year.

She said there had been a social media surge in interest saying: “We can only capitalise on this exposure and in the UK we are seeing this enthusiasm transform into tourist arrivals.”

Ryanair, easyJet, Royal Air Maroc, British Airways, TUI and Air Arabia all fly from the UK and Ireland to Morocco.

In December, temperatures average around 23 degrees while they can soar to 30s in July and August.

Top destinations in Morocco

Marrakesh

Morocco’s fourth largest city is one of its top tourist destinations and the UNESCO World Heritage Medina has plenty to entertain visitors.

The densely packed souk is the largest in Morocco and sells incredible treasures from slippers to carpets.

At night, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square comes alive with market stalls selling street food, spices and nuts.

Tourists could also visit a traditional hammam to unwind after a day exploring the souk.

Fes

The northeastern Moroccan city is often thought of as the country’s cultural capital and is known for its walled medina.

Tourists can wander the city’s medina or enjoy a moment’s peace in the gorgeous Jnan Sbil Gardens.

The beautiful city is also the perfect place to enjoy a fresh orange juice at one of its rooftop cafes.

Essaouira

The port city of Essaouira on Morocco’s Atlantic coast is a top destination for windsurfing, surfing and kitesurfing.

Despite its stunning beach, it’s not known as a sunbathing destination due to the extremely hard blowing wind.

However, the bohemian town is ideal for moody beach walks or tourists can soak up the atmosphere at the town’s fish auction.

Game of Thrones fans will recognise Essaouira’s Skala de la Ville as the walls were used as one of Khalessi’s fortresses.

Other top destinations in Morocco include the gorgeous Blue City, Chefchaouen, known for its Grand Mosque and carpet stores.

The Atlas Mountains are a leading hiking destination and tourists could join a tour to explore the craggy terrain.

Families looking for a budget beach break might enjoy Agadir, Morocco’s famous beach resort town.

Tourists can also take a day trip to Morocco from Spain with the trip from Algeciras to Tangier, taking just 30 minutes.
