The Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España campaign identifies Spain’s most beautiful villages. One of the most stunning is on the popular island of Majorca.
Fornalutx in the Balearic Islands was chosen as one of Spain’s most beautiful villages as part of the campaign.
The mountain town is surrounded by the Alfabia Mountains and is located on Majorca’s western coast.
The charming village is known for its intricate architecture, narrow winding lanes and stone houses.
Fornalutx is hidden among vineyard terraces and during summer the streets are alive with the scent of orange blossom.
Founded in the Middle Ages, time seems to have stood still in Fornalutx and it still has many original features.
The Plaza Espana is at the heart of the village and the location of Fornalutx’s Town Hall and many tapas bars.
Tourists should check out the square’s fountain as the water is thought to contain magical powers.
If a person drinks from the fountain, they will be bewitched and be sure to return to Fornalutx in future.
The 16th century Navidad de Nostra Senyora church is another top attraction. Its organ dates back to 1584.
As a mountain town, Fornalutx has many stone staircases and steep streets so tourists should be prepared for hills.
The town is also the perfect base to explore the nearby mountains on a hiking trail or walking tour.
A visitor who hiked to the Majorcan village wrote on Tripadvisor: “Such a beautifully kept small village.”
As Fornalutx is a small village, it doesn’t have a huge range of dining options but tourists will find small restaurants serving tapas and local wines.
There are a few hotels in the village, some of which have swimming pools with views of the mountains.
In September, the village hosts an annual festival which usually has a bouncy castle and foam cannon.
British tourists can reach Fornalutx by travelling to Palma which is reachable by direct flight from the UK.
Fornalutx is just a 40 minute drive from Palma or tourists can also hike to the village from nearby Soller.
Many tourists choose to stay in Soller as it’s a larger town with more options for eating and drinking.
From Soller, tourists could take the tram or a taxi to Palma de Mallorca and Port Soller on the coast.
Although temperatures drop during winter, the weather in Majorca is usually sunny from spring to autumn.
