Flight attendants share secret travel hacks – from free drinks to cheap tickets

Flight attendants have been sharing "secret" tips on how to blag freebies such as drinks and air miles in a TikTok trend that has left viewers taking notes.

While flying can be fun, it is also expensive, and paying for extras like alcoholic drinks and, on some airlines, even basics like tea and coffee can sour the deal.

It's even more annoying when things go wrong and there are delays, or your entertainment system doesn't work.

Luckily these insider tips prove there are ways to work with the system and get rewarded.

The eye-opening hacks just go to show that if you don't ask, you don't get.

How to get free in-flight drinks

Air hostess Kat Kamalani gave the hack everybody wants to know and spilled the beans on how to get free air miles and drinks.

In a TikTok video uploaded on her @katkamalani page, the flight attendant says it is possible to blag freebies if something goes wrong on your flight, but it only works for nice people.

She says: "Want to know how to get free drinks and miles? Well I'm, a flight attendant and I'm about to tell you!"

Kat claims that if your air conditioning or TV screen isn't working and the cabin crew can't fix it, you can easily get compensation.

She says: "So don't be shy if something is broken. Tell your flight attendant, but make sure you are polite about it."

But there is an exception and Kat says: "If you are mean and rude we are not going to give you a free drink."

Kat then says you can get free air miles if your flight is delayed or cancelled you can get free air miles from customer services, though it's probably a good idea to check your airline's policy beforehand.

The insightful tips went down a storm and the clip was "liked" 20,000 on the video-sharing app and received dozens of comments.

How to get cheap tickets

Fellow flight attendant Emily, behind the hugely popular TikTok account @weariwandered, said in a recent video that you should always aim to fly out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

"These are by far the best days to book the cheapest tickets," she said.

Bizarrely, Emily also claims that searching for your tickets in "Incognito mode" on your web browser also helps to get cheaper tickets.

Since being posted earlier this year, the video has been "liked" more than 177,000 times and viewers were seriously impressed.

Which seat to pick in economy

Sandra Kwon worked for over two years for Emirates before switching careers but continues to give travel tips on her TikTok @jeenie.weenie.

In a video posted in March, she went through a process of elimination to work out which seat in economy is the best to pick.

She started by ruling out the middle seats simply because they “suck”.

The back rows were taken away next as they “do not recline”.

Seats on the emergency exit row are also out of the question as they tend to have “flimsy TV and tables”.

Next, the front part of the plane is crossed out because you apparently have a “higher chance” of nabbing a full row of extra seats on the back.

Seats near the toilets are removed and, as a personal preference, she takes away window seats to avoid the awkwardness of having to budge past people.

Sandra ends up with her ideal seat choice of 49 C, D, F or G. Of course, different airlines have different seating planes but “the logic on the seat choice will be the same”.

What not to drink on a plane

In another video, Kat warned there are some things you should simply never drink on a plane and warned they are unsanitary.

She says: "Rule number one – never consumer any liquid that is not in a can or a bottle.

"The reason being is those water tanks are never cleaned, and they are disgusting.

"So talk to a flight attendant, we rarely, rarely drink the tea or coffee, they come from the same water tank and so when you're drinking that coffee and tea it comes from that hot water and it's absolutely disgusting."

The air hostess claims the parts in the machine won't be cleaned "unless they are broken".

Unsurprisingly, the video caused a stir and received more than half a million "likes", with people sounding horrified by the information.
