It might never have occurred to you before, but it’s probably best that you don’t wear shorts next time you catch a plane – and try not to drop off with your head against the window, either.
This friendly advice has come from a flight attendant, @tommycimato, who has posted a video on TikTok with five health and hygiene tips for airline passengers.
“Do not fall asleep or lean your head on the window,” says Tommy.
“You are not the only one that has done that and you don't know how many people or children have wiped their hands or other things all over the window.”
That leads him on to his tip about not wearing shorts and he imparts the sort of advice that once you’ve heard you’ll probably never forget.
“Don’t or try not to wear shorts when you're on an airplane,” he continued.
“It's the same thing as the window – you never know how clean it's going to be, so if you have pants, you're going to have less germs.”
It’s pretty sound advice, and it’s easy to see why wearing a pair of trousers is a more sensible option.
Tommy’s other top tips for flyers include how to avoid germs in the bathroom, how to stay hydrated and what to do if you feel sick.
“Do not ever touch the flush button with your bare hands. It's honestly just super unsanitary and pretty gross, so when you flush, use a napkin or tissue that's in the lavatory,” he says.

“Don't forget to drink water. Stay hydrated. You want to have about 16oz for every flight that you go on, so keep that in mind.”
And he encourages passengers to get the attention of the cabin crew if necessary.
“Don't feel afraid to let a flight attendant know if you're feeling sick. So if you need food, water or an air sickness bag, please feel free to let us know.”
The responses to his viral video include several from people wanting to know why the planes he works on are apparently so dirty, and asking why they aren’t sanitised between flights.
Other TikTok users point out that they deliberately ignore Tommy’s advice to drink water on their flights, because they don’t want to use the same bathrooms that he warns are unhygienic.
