Flight attendant says putting your seat up could be ‘life or death’ decision

A flight attendant has explained the logic behind a common plane announcement that often "annoys" travellers.

In a TikTok video, Kat Kamalani (@katkamalani) tells viewers that although they might not like putting their seat up when asked, it could save a life.

She says: "People always get so annoyed when I tell them to put their seat up, but here is why guys."

Pointing at the space between seats, she explains: "If there is an emergency, this is called their egress, this is the way they exit the airplane, and if your seat is backwards it is blocked their egress.

"So if a fire is happening on the aircraft or it's in water, seconds is a life or death situation."

The air hostess adds: "It is the same thing for tray table, if it sticks out you can't exit the aircraft quickly.

"Also your luggage and bags right here, if the plane drops suddenly that thing is flying and hitting somebody else."

Kat finishes: "So now you know why us flight attendants when you're taking off and landing say, 'Put your seat up, put your table up, and luggage underneath'."

The video has been "liked" more than 25,000 times and people thanked Kat for speaking up about an issue that seemed to confuse fliers.

One fan commented: "I never knew why you guys did that! Totally makes sense."

Someone else wrote: "Also they take your trash so frequently to make sure that it's not in the way during evacuations and it's just good customer service."

"You know they should include that in their speech and people will listen more," argued another viewer.
