An estimated 200,000 British people live in South Africa as expats. The majority live in one of South Africa’s cities, Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town.

The Expat Insider survey asked expats around the globe to rate their home based on several key factors.

Expats rank their new home on safety, cost of living, leisure activities, environment and more.

South Africa scored towards the bottom of the table, in 46th place out of the 52 destinations included in the survey.

It scored particularly badly when it came to safety and almost half of the expats surveyed felt unsafe there.

The country was also ranked badly on political stability with over 40 percent of expats giving a negative response.

One expat said: “Safety is the biggest problem” while another added that “crime, safety, inequality and poverty” were the biggest issues.

South Africa has very high rates of murder, gender-based violence, robbery and violent assaults.

Carjacking, house robbery are fairly common and many expats have to take more security precautions than in the UK.

According to a 2022 World Bank report, South Africa is the most unequal country in the world.

The report found that 10 percent of the population owned more than 80 percent of the country’s wealth.

It added: “Race remains a key driver of high inequality in South Africa, due to its impact on education and the labour market.”

It said the legacy of colonialism and apartheid continued to reinforce inequality in South Africa.

Despite the difficulties of life in South Africa, expats rated the country’s natural environment very highly.

More than nine in 10 expats felt that the country was beautiful while almost 80 percent were happy with the weather.

South Africa is usually hot during summer which lasts from November to March and chilly in winter from May to August.
One expat said: “Great climate, great natural environment and very good food.”

South African food was very highly rated by the expats and the country’s cuisine often features a lot of fresh ingredients.

The majority of expats were happy with their social life in South Africa and more than a quarter were mainly friends with local residents.

Despite that, many said that it was difficult to find and maintain a job in South Africa.

An expat said: “The job situation is difficult. I am not working in my profession and the monthly income is not enough but we are surviving.”

Close to half of the expats surveyed were unhappy with the local job market while one in four weren’t happy with their job.
