Bourton-on-the-Water: Idyllic shots of picturesque village

Summer is coming to an end but it may be the perfect time to travel as many places will have fewer tourists during the quieter seasons, and this incredibly beautiful village should be added to your next place to visit in the UK. 

Bourton-on-the-Water is located in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, England, and has become famous for its pretty yellow homes, centuries-old archway bridges, and a scenic river that flowers through the heart of the village. 

It has been described as the “most romantic” place in the UK as well as one of the “prettiest Cotswolds villages” by Rough Guides due to its charming and quintessential country English look. 

The village is so incredibly stunning that the official Bourton-on-the-Water website has to officially remind visitors that they do not need to pay to travel to this fairytale-like location. 

The website reads: “Bourton is not a theme park, it does not open and close nor is there an entry fee, it is a vibrant village, home to some 4,000 residents, buzzing with many community groups, local events and fantastic small businesses.”

Why visit Bourton-on-the-Water?

It has been recommended that the best time to visit Bourton-on-the-Water is the autumntime due to its colourful foliage, but is it also meant to be lovely in the wintertime due to the holiday decorations and lights, making the village look like a Christmas card, 

The main attraction in Bourton-on-the-Water is the River Windrush, which runs right through the village and the greenery around the river has become a very popular picnic spot. 

However, Bourton-on-the-Water is unique as it has its very own model village which is a precise replica of the area that began almost a century ago but has been kept up to date since. You can feel like a giant and explore the village from a birds-eye view by wandering around the village’s one-ninth scale model, which even displays local businesses, the area’s two churches as well as an even smaller model village inside it. 

The model is located behind the cosy Old New Inn and was first created in the 1930s by the local pub owner, and was made out of local stone in order to be as authentic as possible. The pub now features a museum in order to learn more about the model village, as well as a dog-friendly village that sells many classic country meals made from local ingredients.

The best things to do in Bourton-on-the-Water

One fun attraction in Bourton-on-the-Water is Birdland Park, home to parrots, owls, pelicans, and flamingos, and is also known as the only place in Britain that breeds King Penguins. 

Nearby the park is the Dragonfly Maze, a classic and stunning English yew maze that encourages visitors to solve 14 riddles inside the maze in order to reach the Golden Dragonfly. This fun maze takes around 30 to 50 minutes to complete and stretches about half a mile, making it easy to get lost in. 

There is also the Cotswold Perfumery which has many famous clients, including the late Queen Elizabeth. If you wish to learn what scent would work best for you and learn some perfume skills, the perfumery holds lessons for visitors to sign up for. 

If you are interested in history, Bourton-on-the-Water is home to The Cotswold Motoring Museum holds over 50 rate vintage cars and bikes, plus is famous for displaying Brum, a bright yellow car popular in a children’s television show in the 1990s. 

However, despite its pretty look, Bourton-on-the-Water has a spooky past filled with ghosts, witchcraft and secret passageways which visitors can explore as part of the Bloody Bourton Walking Tour which explores the area’s local history and would be perfect as part of a Halloween trip.  

Edward Charnel, a tour guide of the Bloody Bourton walks, has warned that this walking tour is not “just another ghost tour. 

In an interview with Punchline Gloucester, Mr Charnel said: “I have over 40 ghost stories for Bourton-on-the-Water but only talk of a few on the tour. And we have a few unusual ghosts around the village!

“As well as ghosts, the Bloody Bourton Walking Tour also covers religion, religious persecution, crime & punishment, murder, secret rooms, witchcraft, sacrifice, highwaymen, mythology, and some of the quirky tales from the village, in fact, the nasty things about this Cotswold village.”
