Japan is best known for its high-tech cities, incredible food, anime and traditional temples. However, it seems there’s another side to the country that many of us don’t know about.

While tourists check out Studio Ghibli museums, cat cafes and noodles some lonely men are getting their kicks at a type of drinking establishment where they can fondle the breasts of women they pay to sit with them…

Oppai bars are a form of "host club" in Japan. Host clubs usually allow guests to pay for the attention of an attractive "host" who will chat to them, play games, drink and maybe even flirt for a fee.

However, Oppai bars go further than most host clubs in a way you might find off-putting – because groping is allowed. Usually touching a woman in a bar, pub or even strip club would result in your butt being kicked to the curb outside.

But, oppai bar when translated apparently sits somewhere closer to "boob touching bar". It’s a place where such behaviour is encouraged rather than reviled.

The jaw-dropping establishments let their customers not only chat to and flirt with young women but also kiss them, touch their breasts and even take their tops off. However, touching the women below the waist is fully off the cards.

Over on Reddit, one tourist asked for someone to clarify what an "oppai" bar is. He added: "Some explanation for a clueless guy, please… What is an "oppai pub" and how is it different from the closest American equivalent? Apparently everyone was embarrassed to talk about it."

Another poster was happy to share – and sounded like he had some experience. They wrote: "You greet the doorman and either nominate a certain girl or opt for the regular course and pay the fee for about 40 minutes.

"They ask what you want to drink and then, depending on the place, you are then handed a cup of mouthwash you use and are then guided to a seat in a booth-type setup with a little table.

"There are several booths in the room, but it feels pretty private and it's very dark. They bring you your drink and you wait a few minutes until the girl shows up."

They continued: "From there it depends on your and the girl's preferences and personalities. You may just talk or you could kiss and take the girl's shirt off and play. Below the waist action is forbidden, but some girls will rub your junk through your clothes.

"If you didn't nominate a girl you'll see normally two to four during the course, if you did, she'll be there for the duration. It's all you can drink for the customer and you can buy drinks for the girl if you want, starting at around 1,000yen, no pressure though on that normally."

Another commenter said: "It’s not a just topless bar – ‘breast-touching bar’ is more accurate description."

It’s unknown how much you’d need to pay to enter the sleazy establishments, but then again, we’re not sure you’d ever want to know. But, considering Japan’s "loneliness epidemic" – the nation even has a Minister for Loneliness – we’re also not too surprised it exists.
