Cosy bar, hot tub and slap-up meals all just a lift away from skiing paradise

Chilly Powder's Au Coin de Feu chalet is at the foot of the winter sports wonderland of 12 resorts spread across France and Switzerland accessible with one ski pass.

Its 16 double rooms and 11 family rooms can sleep 46 guests.

A creche and kids club welcome families with open arms while a cosy bar and hot tub in the snow provide a true Alpine setting to unwind.

Winter prices start from £850 per week based on two adults sharing a standard bedroom, or £2,300 per week for two adults and two children sharing a standard family room.

Where

Au Coin de Feu sits in the Les Prodains area where slopes link Morzine with Avoriaz. With the Prodains Express cable car just a stone's throw away, it takes no time for hotel guests to set off down the slopes to the bustling Avoriaz village.

Ski hire was made a painless task through Doorstep Skis and a private lesson from Avoriaz Alpine Ski School whipped us into shape on day one.

Dinner time is at the heart of Chilly Powder's communal chalet atmosphere. A couple of hours after tables are laid for children, strangers become pals over food and flowing wine.

The couples and friends we ate with each night were as different as the five courses served.

As someone who is not a fan of cheese, alternatives were provided so I didn't miss out.

A stand-out dish was duck which was complemented by the generous nightly offering of roasted vegetables.

Breakfast is a buffet of a hot and cold spread and those back from Avoriaz early enough can enjoy an afternoon tea.

Don't miss a visit to the historic and lively mountain town of Morzine which is a 10 minute taxi ride away. Picturesque streets are dotted with giant Christmas trees and at the centre is an ice rink just in case you wanted to enjoy another winter sport.

Before chalet staff downed tools for Wednesday night they kindly booked us a table at one of Morzine's many restaurants.

Quibbles

Ski a couple of mountains too far away and you risk finding yourself cut off from Avoriaz by 6pm.

VERDICT

Next time, I'd go earlier in the season. 8/10
