Staycations have been given the green light to go ahead from April 12 under Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “roadmap” to unlocking England. For many people, this may mean embarking on their first-ever caravan holiday.

Modern caravans boast all manner of amenities to make guests feel at home, with some high-end residences offering everything from state-of-the-art kitchens to rooftop decks.

However, it seems there are some essential items which should not be forgotten.

In a Reddit forum, seasoned caravan goers have gathered some of their “must-have” items which they believe are essential for a first time caravan holiday.

These cover everything from day-to-day essentials, to ways of helping explore the local area.

Of the long list of items, one of the most commonly cited were “playing cards”.

One commenter said: “Take a pack of playing cards [they are] a must.”

In terms of entertainment, others recommended taking “books” and a “Bluetooth speaker” to connect to your phone.

Having a good supply of entertainment which does not require a phone signal or television signal was also encouraged by some.

“My experience of caravans is if TV/phone/internet signal is c**p, just accept it,” said another commenter.

“Trying to improve it just stresses you out.”

They added: “Use it as a base for some decent long coastal walks.”

Indeed, getting out and about was another key focus of many holidaymakers.

One camper suggested boosting how far you can go by taking or renting a bicycle.

“Take a book, rent a pushbike, and embrace it,” they said.

“Despite what the general feeling towards caravanning is I always quite enjoyed it when I was younger and still do.”

Of course, there were also the essentials to help with general comfort.

“Take lots of loo roll,” warned one caravan regular.

Another added: “Take earplugs and a sleep mask. The curtains in caravans are rubbish.”

Adequate sleepwear is also reported to be essential, even in the summer months

One caravan enthusiast suggested: “Take some warm pyjamas.”

Though summer months may be warm during the day, by nightfall things can suddenly get much chillier.
