The Queen tragically passed away age 96, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday evening.
The palace issued a statement which read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
Within hours of the news, people were already flocking to royal residences such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to lay down flowers and tributes for Her Majesty.

As the nation enters a period of 17 days of mourning, it's been announced that the Queen's royal residences will remain closed until the day of her funeral.
This includes the Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, the Queen's Gallery in Edinburgh. Balmoral Castle, Hillsborough Castle Sandringham House, and the Queen's private estates.
Flags will also remain at half masts at the residences, as well as other official buildings, as a mark of respect until 8am on the day after the mourning period.
Of course that doesn't mean people can't head to the royal residences to pay their respects.
In fact, Buckingham Palace has released a full list of the spots where members of the public can go to lay down floral tributes and pay their respects to Her Majesty – you can see the details below.

Where you can go to pay respect to the Queen
Buckingham Palace: members of the public will be guided to lay floral tributes at dedicated sites in The Green Park or Hyde Park. Flowers left outside the gates of Buckingham Palace will be moved to The Green Park Floral Tribute Garden by The Royal Parks.
Windsor Castle: floral tributes can be left at Cambridge Gate on the Long Walk. These flowers will be brought inside the Castle every evening, and placed on the Castle Chapter grass on the south side of St George’s Chapel and Cambridge Drive.
The Sandringham Estate: members of the public are encouraged to leave floral tributes at the Norwich Gates.
Balmoral Castle: floral tributes can be left at the main gate.
Palace of Holyroodhouse: members of the public are encouraged to give floral tributes to the wardens at the entrance to The Queen’s Gallery. Those flowers will be laid on the Forecourt grass in front of the north turret of the Palace.
Hillsborough Castle: floral tributes may be laid on the castle forecourt, in front of the main gates.
