Airbnb is searching for someone to live within a small international community in Sicily. The lucky winner will stay in an amazing restored house and pay no rent for one year.

Airbnb said: “With the growing flexibility to work and live from anywhere, this unique Sicilian home offers a stylish yet sustainable setting for remote working while helping the village of Sambuca to breathe new life into a community and contribute to its renaissance.”

The pretty village of Sambuca took part in Italy’s one euro (84p) house scheme which sells bargain houses in need of renovation.

The rural village is about 80 km south of Palermo in Sicily and was once named the ‘most beautiful Italian village’.

Traditions include harvesting grapes and olive picking while the village’s cobbled streets are perfect for wandering.

The lucky person will live in a townhouse in the heart of Sambuca with three floors and a master bedroom with ensuite.

The incredible house has been renovated by stylish design company, Studio Didea and is inspired by Sambuca’s history.

However, the winner of the rent free stay will have to take on some duties during their year away.

A private room within the property must be hosted on Airbnb for at least nine months of the person’s stay.

Airbnb said: “We’ll select a person willing to become an Airbnb Host and to join a growing international community that has been moving to Sambuca since the town’s rejuvenation campaign first launched in 2019.

“What they all have in common is a passion for nature, Italian culture and for playing their part in Sambuca’s renaissance.

“The participant will therefore need to demonstrate a commitment to hosting and to contributing to village life.”

The winner won’t have to relocate alone as they are allowed to bring a friend, partner or family with a maximum of two children.

They must speak conversational English and be available to move on June 30, 2022.

There will be an opportunity for the host to learn Italian during their time staying in Sambuca.

During their first month, the host will attend a mentorship program which includes Italian cooking classes.

The winner will be allowed to work in their current job if laws permit them to work remotely overseas.

If moving overseas for a year sounds like too long, Britons could always book a stay in the beautiful house.

Several small Italian villages have taken part in the one euro house scheme to rejuvenate their communities.

As younger people increasingly leave rural communities to relocate to cities, several Italian towns had many empty homes.

Many of the schemes require buyers to spend a certain amount on renovation and stay for a certain amount of years in the village.
