Known as the “Oscars of the takeaway world”, the British Takeaway Awards event was a star-studded affair. The London event was presented by TV presenter comedian Paddy McGuinness and attended by Daisy Lowe, Pixie Lott, Oliver Cheshire, Lucy Mecklenburgh, Chris Kamara and John Barnes.
The judges for the awards were TV chef Nisha Katona and Asma Khan from Netflix’s Chef’s Table, James Hacon and Andrew Kenny, managing director of Just Eat.
The real star of the night, however, were the takeaways who were awarded best in their region awards.
Andrew said: “Takeaway food is a massive part of our British culture and this year more than ever we wanted to recognise the local takeaways that kept the nation fed, while also making an immeasurable contribution to their local communities and the UK economy.
“From delivering a taste of normality when communities needed it most to providing healthier options we want to congratulate all of the deserving winners for continuing to bring the nation the food they love.”
The winners were chosen after a rigorous process involving a public vote, written submission and mystery shopping.
The overall winner was a Sheffield takeaway shop.

Sakushi offers great Japanese food to locals and is a firm favourite in the Yorkshire city.
Regional winners were also named.
From Indian to fish and chips, burgers to pizza, takeaway favourites were well represented in the awards.
On social media, one user commented about the awards ceremony.
They said: “Recognising the heroes that went above and beyond during this terrible pandemic and difficult lockdowns, supporting key workers, feeding hungry children and giving the nation light through the darkness.”
Winners have been delighted by their wins.
On social media, Sakushi said: “Sakushi isn’t just the best in Yorkshire! We are the best in the UK! Thank you so much to everyone and it is our pleasure to serve you the best Japanese in the country!”
Strad Kyriacou, co-owner of Chris’s Fish N Chip said: “It feels amazing to have won the Best Takeaway in the East Midlands and to be up there as one of the best in the UK.
“It’s our sixth win at the BTAs and as such, we are the most decorated takeaway ever at these awards, but this year felt extra special because of the pandemic.”
Casa Rosa in Birtley, Gateshead has won the award for the third year running.
Last year, owner Ilona Mielcarek said: “When I started we did fewer orders in a week than we do in three hours now.”
This year, she took to Facebook and wrote: “We’re incredibly proud to announce that we’ve been crowned BEST TAKEAWAY in the North East for the THIRD year running!
“We’re so grateful to be celebrating once again, but we can’t thank our hardworking staff and amazing customers enough for supporting us throughout the past year, this wouldn’t have been possible without your help!
“Here’s to another fantastic year as the BEST IN THE NORTH EAST!”
