While Australia is often an appealing option, many expats find the housing situation unaffordable for retired people.
New research from the experts at Moving to Spain found a gorgeous country was the best destination in Europe for retired British expats.
The winning country has a breathtaking coastline, delicious cuisine and much more sunshine than the UK.
Although Spain is usually the most popular destination for British expats, it was actually it’s neighbour that took the crown.

Portugal topped the list and was crowned the best country in Europe for retired British expats.
The country’s healthcare was highly regarded and its residents enjoy a long life expectancy of 81.
Portugal is also regarded as a safe country and expats will have access to some of Europe’s best beaches at the Algarve.

Retired expats may be able to find cheaper housing by opting to live inland in Portugal rather than by the coast.
Spain took second place on the list while Italy rounded off the top three. However, according to another recent study, a country a little further afield is the best destination for expats.
Norway was recently named Europe’s worst country for expats while a Middle Eastern country was ranked bottom worldwide.
