‘Beautiful’ city in France crowned best walkable destination

Planning a holiday? One of southern France’s prettiest cities has just been crowned one of the continent’s most walkable.

The expert team at Preply analysed some of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations to find the most pedestrian friendly.

Nice, a gorgeous city on the French Riviera, came in the top 10 on the list. Known for its pretty Old Town, stylish beaches and artistic former residents, Nice is a fantastic city break destination.

Nice’s city centre is fairly compact, making it a fantastic destination for tourists who want to explore on foot. Its picturesque Old Town is almost completely pedestrianised.

‘Vieux Nice’s’ colourful buildings and cobblestone streets is usually the area most tourists head to first.

‘Alanah Reeve’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Such an authentic, timeless area of Nice which truly represents the French, Italian influences. The buildings are beautiful and we found it very clean and looked after.”

‘Traveler9796’ wrote: “A must see for the views and markets! The shops and restaurants were all unique and picturesque.”

The city’s flower market is its most famous. Marche Aux Fleurs Cours Saleya is open daily, apart from Mondays, until 1pm and sells a huge range of fresh cut flowers.

If flowers aren’t your thing, the market is also a great place to pick up local produce or sample some regional cuisine.

While Nice might be a walkable city, tourists will need to brace themselves if they want to admire the jewel of the French Riviera from its prettiest viewpoint.

Colline du Chateau is a 92m high hill with panoramic city views. On the ascent, make sure to stop to check out the artificial waterfall that was created at the end of the 19th century. If the climb feels too daunting, hop on the tourist train for a lift to the top.

Nice has two fantastic art galleries that are well worth visiting. Check out Musee Matisse to learn more about the famous artist who spent winters in the city or see Chagall’s vibrant paintings.
