Bath Christmas market dubbed ‘depressing’ – but locals hit back

Britain’s Christmas markets have been open for a week or so now and thousands of people wanting festive fun have flocked to the fun days out. You’ll find lights, beer huts, mulled wine and handmade gifts at most festive markets around the country.

But, there are certain things that can improve or ruin a Christmas market for visitors. Earlier this week, one reporter noted that the mega crowds at York alongside booked out restaurants, no parking and queues ruined the environment.

Now, visitors to Bath Christmas market have complained about the offering too. TikToker Chasing the Dream sparked a huge debate when he shared a video of the West Country attraction, reports BristolLive.

He told his 13,000 followers: "Christmas markets are great until you turn up at the Bath Christmas Market. For starters, it doesn't feel like a Christmas market. It just feels like a normal market with, I don't know, maybe a few Christmas decorations.

"There's no Christmas music on. You've got street performers playing Fields of Gold and around the corner you have someone playing Coldplay. Yeah, it's really not the best Christmas market we've ever been to, it's probably actually the worst Christmas market that we've been to."

He commented that it was actually "very depressing" but not everything was bad as he noted that "the doughnut stand is actually quite nice-looking with all the Christmas decorations".

Plus, he liked the "little Christmas stall" too. However, despite the small praise his judgement of the market was damning.

However, locals hit back at the social media personality’s assessment. One person wrote: "What? Bath Christmas market is amazing! You're only showing a tiny bit of it here – it's huge."

Chasing the dream replied that there was simply no "Christmas music or atmosphere or merry Christmas feeling" which he felt made it less festive. But another commenter added: "As someone who lives in Bath, you're in a tiny part of it there and early in the day, in the evening there's music and it's very festive."

While another noted; "Was there yesterday- it was lovely, absolutely packed with people and the Sally Army were out playing Christmas carols." Another agreed: "Went last Saturday in the evening and felt like Christmas, even had a snow machine going in that area."

On the official website, the market is said to run from November 23 to December 10. It added: "Walk through a winter wonderland and soak up the festive atmosphere in the historic city of Bath.

"Bath Christmas Market is a free event that spans the picturesque Bath City Centre. With chalets nestled amongst iconic monuments and mulled wine on every corner, embrace the start of the Christmas season and make memories that are sure to last a lifetime."

It claims to offer ice skating, a Father Christmas’ Grotto, a female vocal trio, an orchestral performance, Jazz and Christmas music. Plus, lots of stall holders offering everything from gin and wine to chocolate, prints, pottery, candles, pet toys, baskets and baubles.
