Flight attendants may upgrade passengers if there is space in first class. But how do they pick which tourists to upgrade?
The expert team at Travel Lens told Express.co.uk it’s very important to wear the right clothes if passengers want a free flight upgrade.
They said: “There is a need to avoid wearing more relaxed clothing and instead, opt for more formal wear.
“Although there is no written rule for what you should and shouldn’t wear on a flight in first class, it’s recommended that passengers wear t-shirts, trousers and smart footwear as a minimum.
“Avoid flip flops and any trainers with heavy branding on them.”
Flight attendants are more likely to pick smartly dressed passengers if a seat in first class becomes available.
The team added: “Knee-length skirts and dresses are also popular items of clothing worn in first class and as well as providing a professional look, they also deliver much-needed comfort.”
Knee-length items are often seen as respectable and might give a passenger a better chance of an upgrade.
Passengers could also try wearing business clothes to be considered for an upgrade on their plane.
Aside from clothing, there are a couple of other things passengers can do to increase their chances of a free upgrade.
The team said: “Some airlines have been known to upgrade passengers to first class for a number of reasons, including if you’re departing for your honeymoon or even if they just have extra space and are happy to allocate to arriving passengers.
“It has been suggested that you may stand a higher chance of a free upgrade to first class if the outfit you’re wearing is less relaxed and more formal, so it’s worth keeping this in mind when considering your next airport outfit.”
Passengers could have a better chance of a free upgrade if they mention to staff that it’s a special occasion.
Tourists celebrating honeymoons, wedding anniversaries or birthdays might be selected first for upgrades.
It’s always worth mentioning that it’s a special occasion at the check-in desk as staff may choose to provide extras.
Even if a free upgrade isn’t available, passengers may be offered a free snack or a glass of fizz to celebrate.
Flight attendants have also said that passengers who bring gifts for crew are more likely to get an upgrade.
Cabin crew work long hours and might be appreciative of a gift voucher for a coffee or some sweets.
Even if passengers don’t want to bring a gift, polite tourists are far more likely to be selected for free extras.
Tourists could always ask if there is an upgrade available but they might end up disappointed.
