Southwest will offer free same-day standby with its cheapest fares

Southwest Airlines will soon offer free same-day standby with Wanna Get Away fares, the carrier’s lowest-priced product.

In a post Thursday on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter), Southwest noted the upcoming change but didn’t offer a specific rollout date.

The carrier already offers free same-day standby for its three other fare categories: Business Select, Anytime and Wanna Get Away Plus.

Currently, Southwest customers can only get on a standby list by speaking in person with a gate agent. However, the airline told USA Today that it will soon offer the ability to sign up for standby online or through its app.

However, the airline gave an ambiguous response to a question on the matter from aviation blogger Jason Rabinowitz.

“At the moment, we do not have additional details for changing the way our standby works, but we will definitely keep our customers updated if we do add additional options or flexibility,” Southwest tweeted.

Travel Weekly sent an email to Southwest on Thursday seeking clarification.

Also, Southwest announced Thursday that it will soon offer free WiFi for Business Select flyers.
