The UIA crew demonstrated competency during emergency landing caused by malperformance of one of the aircraft engines

Results of the internal investigation conducted by Ukraine International Airlines confirmed that the crew of the Kyiv – Bangkok flight acted professionally and strictly complied to aviation safety regulations and requirements. Further investigation in consultation with the aircraft manufacturer representatives will be carried out to determine technical causes that led to the engine failure. After diversion to Kiev Boryspil International airport, all passengers continued their journey aboard another UIA aircraft.

Boeing 767-300ER UR-GEC aircraft that operated PS 271 Kyiv – Bangkok flight on July 29, 2019, departed from Kiev Boryspil International airport at 8:02 p.m. LT. While the aircraft was gaining height, the crew discerned rapid parameter changes of one of the engines. Upon analyzing the situation and revising the controlling documents, the crew made a decision to turn the engine off and return to departure airport, and, therefore, informed flight operations officers on diversion. At 8:22 p.m. the aircraft landed at Kiev Boryspil International airport. Due to heavy landing weight, the break gear temperature increased and, consequently, minor fumigation occurred. Passengers and crew were totally safe.

Passengers were transported back to Terminal D and, after the aircraft substitution, continued their journey to Bangkok. The aircraft departed from Kyiv at 2:08 a.m. on July 30 and landed in Bangkok at 3:30 p.m. LT on July 30.

“There is no proof against emergencies. However, our pilots undergo sophisticated training and are perfectly ready to take actions if need be,” noted Igor Sosnovsky, UIA Vice President Operations. “Due to orchestrated efforts of the crew and airport services, we were able to quickly and efficiently settle the situation and carry passengers to their destination.”
