The popular destinations with bans on cruise

Amsterdam has become the latest leading tourist destination to ban cruise ships from the city centre.

While there’s no set date for the introduction of the ban yet, the move has been planned to reduce the number of tourists in the city.

Cruise holidays can be controversial as the huge number of tourists that disembark can cause congestion and crowds.

Cruise tourists often don’t spend much money on the destinations they visit as all their meals are served onboard. Pollution is also a concern and a British city is one of the continent’s most polluted by ships.

Residents on the Greek island of Santorini recently complained that cruise ships were blocking the island’s famous sunsets from view.

Cruise tourists have been compared to a “plague of locusts” in Barcelona, where there were plans to raise taxes for passengers.

Palma de Mallorca also has restrictions on ships with just three allowed per day, only one of which can be a mega-ship.

Several popular ports in Norway have also seen cruise protests while campaigners recently took to the water in Marseille to rage against the industry.

Despite restrictions, cruise holidays remain popular and the world’s biggest ever ship is due to launch next year.
