The largest Princess Cruises ship ever constructed will have new and expanded designs for the cruise line’s signature spaces.
The Sun Princess, due in February 2024, will be 175,500 gross tons, giving designers more room to refresh venues and “elevate them to the next level,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.
The 4,300-guest ship will be designed with creative influences from the sun like the three-story Horizons dining room, offering three different dining experiences and levels of formality.
As the first ship in the line’s Sphere class, the Sun will also include a newly-designed brand-iconic Piazza and an entertainment space inspired by the terraces of Santorini called The Dome.
Princess said the ship’s Arena will feature the line’s most advanced theater design, including a visual above the central stage that can become part of the show. The theater ceiling will accentuate the Arena’s in-the-round configuration, including curved walls alluding to the movement of the tide. The Arena also has movable seats and a capacity for more than 1,000 people, along with three configurations to maximize sight lines.
Princess will also add new features to the line’s staple restaurants, such as an open-mouth oven that reaches 968 degrees for Alfredo’s Pizzeria, providing a food experience comparable to one they would receive in Italy.
The new ship will modernize the Crown Grill classic steakhouse with leather booths, circular seating and modern artwork custom-made for the restaurant. Under the reimagining, guests will also be able to watch their food being prepared in a show galley.
Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria will be designed with intimate bistro-style nooks and a circular main room. It will feature a geometric design that includes a pasta room for guests to explore the pasta-making process.
The ship’s entertainment spaces will include the largest casino of any Princess ship by both size and number of gaming positions with more than 200 slots and video poker games.
The Princess Live! space will add in elements from the Explorer’s Lounge. The area will be for game shows, trivia and the daily Wake Show. Princess Live! will have loose and fixed lounge seating, full beverage service and a large LED screen on stage.
The ship will have five retail shops that connect, allowing guests to drift from a store featuring Princess logo merchandise to a lifestyle boutique and a new bazaar with destination-specific items. The shops will also include goods like jewelry, watches, cosmetics, fragrances and a modern art gallery.
The Sun will have new designs, signage and décor at Crooner’s, Wheelhouse Bar, International Café, Good Spirits and Galeteria.
The ship is under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and will sail its inaugural spring and summer seasons in the Mediterranean before shifting to the Caribbean in the fall. The ship will be the first in the line to be powered by liquified natural gas.
Princess has plans for a sister ship to follow in 2025.
