Cruise ships, like most forms of public transport, have severely ramped up their hygiene standards since the coronavirus pandemic. However, a former cruise ship worker revealed how “gross” it was to work onboard a vessel during their time as an employee.

The ex-cruise worker, who has not disclosed which company they worked for, shared “secrets I learned working on a cruise ship” in a TikTok video posted by the viral entertainment page @Attn.

The worker explained: “Cruise ships are gross.

“In 2015, it was found that a lounge chair by a ship’s pool had over seven times more germs than the acceptable limit.

“Also gastrointestinal illnesses are super common, that’s why they’re always telling you to wash your hands.”

The worker explained: “Cruise ships are gross.

“Also gastrointestinal illnesses are super common, that’s why they’re always telling you to wash your hands.”

One of the most common illnesses associated with cruise ships is norovirus. The vomiting illness is most often spread through contaminated food or water, or by touching a contaminated surface.

Cruise ships have a regimented cleaning regime to try and limit outbreaks of such illnesses, but when they do occur, staff have protocols in place to try and keep cases to a minimum.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention also has an official Vessel Sanitisation Program which helps prevent and control the spread of illnesses.

Another former cruise worker, Brian David Bruns, assured cruise staff have been working hard to clean the ship long before passengers step onboard.

In his book Cruise a la Care, he explained: “Some people go to great lengths to ‘protect’ themselves from cruise-borne germs.

“Many a cruise guest enters his or her cabin and promptly wipes down every conceivable well-used surface with disinfectant wipes; light switches, doorknobs, faucets, and telephone.

“Some go so far as to place the TV remote control in a quart-sized Ziploc bag.”

Another former cruise worker, Brian David Bruns, assured cruise staff have been working hard to clean the ship long before passengers step onboard.

In his book Cruise a la Care, he explained: “Some people go to great lengths to ‘protect’ themselves from cruise-borne germs.

“Many a cruise guest enters his or her cabin and promptly wipes down every conceivable well-used surface with disinfectant wipes; light switches, doorknobs, faucets, and telephone.

He goes on to reassure passengers that while this behaviour may make them “feel better” the work is largely unnecessary.

Brian added: “Every home port, room stewards disinfect every high touch item in the cabin, especially in the bathroom.

“That bathroom has about 400 times less bacteria than your office desk.”

As a result, the cruise worker said: “I worked on ships for four years and never got sick once.”
