Melburnians anxiously awaiting impending freedom have turned out in their hundreds to queue in chilly temperatures for an arguably non-essential reason.
While the highly anticipated easing of coronavirus restrictions is less than 48 hours away, the temptation of an iconic dessert has proven too irresistible for locals to pass up.
Massive lines of masked Victorians formed this week outside pop-up dessert store, Moon Cruller, owned by the company that runs nearby Melbourne icon Lune Croissanterie.
The Fitzroy hub attracted a swarm of enthusiastic patrons currently subject to tough lockdown restrictions banning them from leaving home for anything other than five essential reasons.
Until Friday, residents must only go outside for exercise, to get vaccinated, provide care, shop for food, and work or study.

One Melburnian to get her hands on a cruller – a deep-fried pastry similar to a doughnut – said she loved “the irony of Melburnians spending their ‘exercise time’ queuing to eat crullers”.
Another woman, who visited the cruller store on Tuesday, said she was enjoying “supporting local in every area”.
A third shared a photo of the crowd to Instagram, writing, “Calling all doughnut zombies. Yours too for $22 for four”.
One new case of Covid-19 was reported on Wednesday for Victoria after the state recorded two new infections on Tuesday.
Acting Premier James Merlino on Wednesday assured Victorians restrictions would be eased midnight Thursday as planned.
