UK town dubbed ‘British Turkey’ with sunny beaches, palm trees and hidden coves

There are lots of lovely seaside towns in the UK, whether you're heading to regions such as Cornwall or Wales and beyond. But, millions of Brits still prefer to spend a fortune jetting off abroad for sun, and and sea.

Well, those who want the Turkey experience without the fuss and stress of a long journey might have to take a look closer to home. One town in Devon has been dubbed the "British Turkey" on TikTok.

It’s hardly surprising that the area being gushed about is in Devon as the south-west county is filled with blissful Blue Flag beaches, often sees sunshine in summer and even has architecture that can feel somewhat Mediterranean, reports DevonLive.

Video creator 6mxria crowed about Torquay when she visited the area. The town has fun beaches to sunbathe on and a palm-tree covered promenade that makes you feel like you’re in Antalya, Turkey.

Plus, there’s a buzzing harbour and plenty of pubs and restaurants that attract holidaymakers each year. In fact, did to know that Torquay even sits in the English Riviera – a 22 mile stretch of outstanding South Devon coastline?

In 6mxria’s video clip she showed the sun shining on the promenade, the bright blue water of the harbour as boats and yachts glittered in the summer sun, as well as the view from a fairground ride and the waves crashing gently on the beach’s shore.

In fact, she called it a "hidden gem in the UK".

In the comments, people complimented Torquay, with one person dubbing it the "British Turkey". Another said: "I’ve got too many memories to count." Someone else simply added "Torquay is beautiful, I’ve been there."

Some of the best beaches to visit nearby include Oddicombe, Meadfoot and Torre Abbey Sands. While the town’s harbour if fabulous for strolling and sea views or for dining on fresh seafood.

The South West Coast Path is a good choice for those travellers who love hiking. You’ll gain access to hidden coves, beaches and outstanding coastal views.

Now, even though Torquay is just a small English town there’s lots outside of the beaches that could peak your interest. Agatha Christie lives there most of her life for anyone who fancies a visit to her museum or a walking tour of her story.

Plus, you can spend a day exploring the Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves. A fantastic trip for archaeology or history buffs. Then you can head to Bygones – a museum of Victorian history will a whole street full of life-sized old shops.

Meanwhile, there’s a model village filled with tiny houses to amuse small children or model enthusiasts. Or, Dinosaur World for kids obsessed with T-rexs’.

Or try a coastal sea-fari where you’ll dash through the waves looking out for seals, seabirds and dolphins. Just make sure you take some sunglasses and waterproofs as you could get wet!
