A British tourist has taken to Reddit to Tripadvisor to share their anger after a two euro charge was added to his bill for cutting a sandwich in half.

The unnamed diner was eating at Bar Pace in Gera Lario in Italy’s popular Lake Como area when the incident occurred.

The receipt included a bill for ‘diviso da meta’ of ‘cutting in half’ which was priced at two euros (£1.73) for his toasted sandwich.

The tourist uploaded the receipt to Tripadvisor, describing the charge as “incredible but true” after his holiday in June.

He said: “There were two of us and we asked for a toasted sandwich to share at the table. We have to pay because the toast was cut in half?”

The fee was more expensive than the espresso the couple ordered and took the price of their sandwich to 9.50 euros (£8.21).

However, in an interview with an Italian newspaper, the owner of the cafe defended the controversial charge.

The restaurant owner Cristina Biachhi told La Repubblica: “Additional requests have a cost. We had to use two plates instead of one and the time to wash them was doubled, and then two placemats.

“It wasn’t a simple toasted sandwich, there were also French fries instead. It took us time to cut it in two.”

The owner said the customer didn’t make a complaint at the time and said the charge would have been dropped if it had been queried.

It’s not the first time tourists have been left shocked by a European restaurant bill. In 2022, two American tourists were horrified when they were charged £514 for a snack and drinks at a bar on the Greek island of Mykonos.

Tourists can also be charged more for sitting on a terrace, for a bread basket or for water in European restaurants.

Holidaying British tourists will also need to watch out for some of Italy’s more unusual behaviour rules.

Tourists could be fined for eating an ice-cream in an inappropriate place, sitting on a historic monument or wearing a bikini in the wrong area.
