This gorgeous Scottish town makes for an ideal staycation this winter

As the nights get darker and the temperatures drop, a holiday might be just the tonic we need.

Yet while many Britons will choose to dodge the UK’s gloomy weather with a flight to a sunny country abroad, there are plenty of staycation opportunities on the British Isles that can make for a beautiful wintery retreat.

This is particularly true of Scotland, where the rugged landscape and mystical wildernesses – and not to mention a hearty offering of pubs – provide an escapist’s paradise.

And whilst there are plenty of ideal getaway spots in Scotland over the coming months, one village in particular has an especially alluring offer of activities: Aviemore.

Situated in the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands, Aviemore provides some of the quintessential winter activities, including skiing, sledging and snowshoeing.

But this isn’t your usual run-of-the-mill skiing resort location, as there are some breathtaking parts of nature to enjoy too.

Cairngorms National Park is home to the UK’s only free-roaming herd of reindeer and is where 150 of them wander the landscape and the Glenlivet Estate.

Likewise, Rothiemurchus is another estate, with a history that’s said to date back as far as the 8th century, and which now provides all the essentials for a family day out, including accommodation, dining and outdoor activities.

And within just a short 25-minute drive from Aviemore, you can visit Britain’s first open-air museum, too – the Highland Folk Museum – which allows visitors to explore what life was like in the area in the two-and-a-half centuries since 1700.

These activities are just the surface though. For an area that’s so tranquil, it’s hard to beat simply putting on your boots and a warm jacket and taking a stroll through whichever woodland or open landscape takes your fancy.

When you’re overlooking one of the area’s wild parts of terrain and taking in the natural beauty, you won’t be thinking twice about whether you are in a hot country or not.
