Spain is the UK’s leading holiday destination but there are several other European hotspots where Britons might be able to enjoy a cheaper break.

Although it’s often cheapest to book flights as far in advance as possible, Britons can still save if they’re flexible on destination.

While Spain’s beaches are world-renowned, there are plenty of other destinations with “stunning beaches” just a short flight away.

Express.co.uk spoke to David Doughty, travel expert and CEO of Admiral Jet, for his top recommendations.

Whether it’s Portugal, Greece or Turkey, there are plenty of excellent alternatives to Spain this summer.

Portugal

David said: “The Algarve region of Portugal is a great alternative to Spain’s Costa del Sol, with plenty of stunning beaches, delicious seafood and charming towns to meander through.

“You can find great deals on accommodation, especially if you’re willing to stay a little further away from the main tourist areas.

“I recommend exploring the rugged coastline and taking a boat trip to some hidden coves and caves along the way.”

Greece

David said: “The island of Crete has some beautiful beaches and quaint villages, as well as some fascinating historical sites.

“The weather is warm, and the people are welcoming and friendly. And if you’re looking for a party atmosphere, I suggest you check out the island of Ios, it’s known for its lively nightlife, and there are plenty of affordable places to stay.”

Skyscanner recently shared that the cheapest day to fly to Greece is a Monday and Britons are better waiting until the end of the school holidays for a break.

Turkey

David recommended Turkey’s gorgeous Bodrum Peninsula to Express.co.uk as a budget choice.

He said: “You can find some great deals on all-inclusive resorts, especially if you’re willing to travel outside peak season.

“Don’t forget to explore the local markets and sample some delicious Turkish cuisine while you’re there.”
