On the gov.uk web page, it states: “The new fees will help the Home Office move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.
“The Government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.
“The fees will also contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders.
“The increase will also help enable the Government to continue improving its services.”
The cost increase comes after five years of passports remaining at the same price point.
Such proposals are always subject to parliamentary scrutiny, claims the Home Office.
According to passportwaitingtime.co.uk – which uses crowdsourced data to find out how long passports are currently taking to arrive – passports are taking between 11 and 16 days to reach customers.
This means that if you apply now you can still receive your passport at the lower cost.
