The capital Trieste is filled with palaces, Roman creations, food and even pretty beaches.
Friuli Venezia Giulia also contains a solid wall of Alps lending the area a snowcapped beauty.
The area is one of Italy’s least touristic and so local authorities hope to tempt travellers to explore the region where tiramisu and grappa were both created.
The tourism board for the region hopes to promote sustainable tourism and so has launched a new scheme that will run until May 31.
The board will reimburse the train fare of anyone who arrives in cities Trieste or Udine – and the who land in Grado or Lignano Sabbiadoro by the coast.
Plus, holidaymakers will access free public transportation around the region and both free or discounted museum and attraction tickets.
Some guided tours will also be free or cheaper.
The promotion was launched in October 7 and you can access the benefits at this train stations: Latisana-Lignano-Bibione, Cervignano-Aquileia-Grado, Trieste Airport, Trieste Centrale, or Udine.
You can use any state-run Trenitalia trains, Intercity lines, or speedy Frecce lines.
Tourists who use the scheme must stay in the region for at least two nights and use a hotel or guest house that’s taking part in the scheme.
You can find participating accommodation on the turismofvg.it website.
To take part book your accomodation and train travel on the turismofvg website and then the price of the return train ticket will be taken from your total to pay.
You’ll get a FVGCard free of charge which lets you use the trains and buses in the local area for free and iy will give you cheap access to some museums and exhibitions.
Theme parks, beaches, guided tours, swimming pools and historical sites like the Trieste Roman theatre will also be majorly discounted with the card.
Public holidays, Christmas and Easter are not included in the promotion and staying over these dates won’t get you the perks of the card or train fare refund.
