Many British tourists choose to holiday in Spain’s beautiful Costa del Sol region. One of the area’s attractions has been named as the best in Spain.

The Remarkable Venue Awards look for the best tourist attractions in the world. Entries are scored on their unique appeal to visitors.

One Costa del Sol attraction was voted the best tourist attraction in Spain for its unique and exciting offering.

The Mariposario de Benalmádena, or the Butterfly Park of Benalmádena, won the prestigious award.

The butterfly park is designed as a Thai temple and visitors can walk among 1,500 species of exotic butterflies.

The Mayor of Benalmádena, Victor Navas, said: “Today, we want to honour the butterfly park for its success at being recognised as the best tourist attraction in Spain.

“This park is always the most visited attraction in our town, so this fills us with pride.

“The award reinforces the tourist attraction of Benalmádena, which offers the largest concentration of leisure spaces on the Costa del Sol.”

The park is located about 20 minutes away from the city of Malaga and even has waterfalls.

One visitor from London said on Tripadvisor: “Such a beautiful hidden gem!

“I bought tickets online for this place as a birthday surprise for my partner due to his sentimental connection to butterflies.

“The customer service was so lovely, warm and welcoming. The butterfly experience was very special with so many different types of exotic butterflies flying around.

“It is incredibly peaceful and a beautiful place to visit.”

A ticket to the spectacular park costs 8.50 euros (£7.11) currently for an adult while a child ticket is 7.50 euros (£6.28) online.

Another visitor from Colchester said: “Wow this is a must attraction if in the area. Amazing amount of butterflies, moths, fish and flowers. Everywhere is very clean.”

One tourist from East Grinstead said: “A very relaxing hour spent inside the building where the butterflies flutter around you going about their business.

“Some fantastic species and it was interesting watching them feed at the special feed stations.”

A visitor from Dublin in Ireland said: “Me and my boyfriend came here before heading to the airport and we are so glad we did, this place is so amazing and I’d encourage everyone who visits the area to go!”

As well as butterflies, the park is also home to other exotic animals including toucans, turtles, bats, frogs and parrots.

The butterfly park beat a winery, an aquarium and a theme park to win the prestigious award.

As a beach resort, tourists in Benalmádena will have easy access to the coast with many bars and restaurants.

The butterfly park is also a short trip from other popular Costa del Sol resorts and is a great day out for kids.
