Christmas is often a time for festive getaways, and though under the current tier system it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so, at the beginning of December there were an array of London hotels lit up and ready to welcome guests. One of the main ways to help local hotels is to opt for a holiday at home, giving yourself a little bit of rest and relaxation in a new environment. Though this may not be possible for now, there is plenty of time to plan your next city break.

If you are looking for understated cool, with a sprinkling of Christmas sparkle, then the Hoxton Hotel is one to keep your eye on.

Located in High Holborn, this city centre hotel is just a stone’s throw from some of the Capital’s highlights, yet you wouldn’t realise it from it’s cosy and tranquil rooms.

Most definitely a hip hangout, the hotel was only recently refurbished in March ahead of lockdown measures, meaning rooms are almost brand new.

Whether guests want somewhere within walking distance to restaurants, shops or attractions, the Hoxton’s Holborn location promises everything wrapped up in a slick and stylish environment.

Housed in a Grade II listed building which was once a factory, there is a stunning balance between industrial cool and modern luxury, with plush sofas, an array of chairs and cool coffee tables littering the lobby.

It’s a place which appears to be popular among some of London’s hipster-workers; many of whom during our visit seemed to have switched the groundhog days of working from home for a change of scenery – with delicious food and beverages to fill the gaps between emails.

However, amid the modern edge of the hotel are a scattering of retro details – including some old-timey wooden cinema seats located outside the lifts on Floor One.

This interior dream is continued right into the bedrooms, although navigating to your room may seem a little tricky at first.

The Hoxton Holborn has thrown out the traditional numbered doors and gone for a more minimalistic silver floor plaque to guide guests to their hipster hideaway.

Once you do find your room, however, you’re in for a treat.

The Hoxton offers six different levels of room to fit all stay needs and family sizes – including pet-friendly options.

During our stay, we were lucky enough to spread out in the King size bed of the Biggie – a 290 sq ft freshly renovated suite.

The room accommodates families and dogs, and is recommended for those enjoying longer stays.

As with the entirety of the hotel, it was the aesthetic and design elements of the room which really sent my heart fluttering.

Stylish from top-to-bottom, rooms of all sizes are fitted with comfortable beds, trendy parquet wood flooring and artwork sourced from local creatives.

In some of the rooms, wallpaper designed by Timorous Beasties shows Charles Dickens-inspired illustrations – a nod to the literary giant who lived just down the road from the hotel.

Upon entering the room we were welcomed with the soothing sounds of Smooth Chill emitting from the old school, pastel blue Roberts radio.

However, this isn’t the only piece of tech that blends seamlessly into its surroundings.

A flat-screen TV adorns the wall directly in front of the bed, perfect for a lazy Sunday morning nibbling room service granola (provided via snack bag) and drinking the selection of coffee and tea on offer in the room.

What makes mornings even better is the Hoxton’s “flexi-time” allowance, giving guests who book direct the opportunity to pick a check-in and check-out time which works for them.

Although the room does not promise a huge wardrobe, it does offer a millennial pink hanging wrack with shelves, complete with gold appliqué.

There is also a spacious desk and free wifi, perfect for those of us working from home in the current climate.

No hotel room is complete, of course, without an ensuite bathroom – and this one left us more than impressed.

Polished and contemporary, the white bathroom’s main draw was definitely its huge shower which teetered on the edge of a wet room.

Guests need not worry about bringing basic toiletries with them either, as the hotel providers sizeable containers of shampoo, conditioner and body wash for use.

While snuggling up in the king size bed is more than enough to keep one occupied for an entire night, The Hoxton Holborn also boasts its own in-house restaurant.

If you aren’t feeling up to venturing into the outside world, the great news is that Rondo promises an enticing menu just a short journey downstairs.

Like the rest of the Hoxton, its eatery is an interior delight, with dark wood features and some cream skirted lampshades overhead which billow as though dancing high above.

Staff were on hand to talk us through the delectable array of cocktails, which are both aesthetically pleasing as well as a tangy treat.

If you are in the business of photographing your beverages, try the “Pretty in Pink”, complete with an edible flora arrangement.

There is also a dish to meet all tastes – including a winter menu for those who manage to bag a stay during the chillier months.

The kitchen is headed up by Chris Gillard, who works hard to collate an array of bold British dishes, complete with wine on tap.

For us, The Hoxton and its glistening, yet understated tree, provided the perfect festive stay before we were plunged back into lockdown measures.

Luckily, the hotel promises Instagram-worthy stays all times of the year and could be the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a boutique holiday at home.

Rooms vary in price, depending on the size of room, length of stay and time of booking.
