Cruise guests can pick from a variety of cabins when they book a holiday. The most expensive rooms are suites while the cheapest option is usually an interior cabin.

Interior cabins don’t have any windows, although some cruise lines have an electronic window where passengers are shown a live stream from outside.

A cruise guest ‘Elewwoo’ posted on Reddit: “Would you pay an extra $500 (£397) for a balcony?”

Balcony rooms are usually a lot more expensive than interior cabins although passengers may be able to get a cheaper upgrade if there are a lot of unsold rooms.

Guests will have a private space to enjoy the view and can even order breakfast or have a drink on their balcony.

A cruise guest ‘7of69’ said: “I always get a balcony and spend plenty of time on it. Honestly, I wouldn’t consider cruising without one.

“I like to sit there in the morning with coffee and in the afternoon with a book, sometimes nodding off for a short nap.

“Just before getting dressed for dinner, I will grab a drink from the closest bar and sit there listening to the waves roll past.”

Balcony cabins can be ideal for passengers who suffer from seasickness as they will be able to focus on the horizon and get fresh air.

Guests who struggle with claustrophobia may also prefer a balcony cabin as they will have more room to move around.

However, another passenger ‘Few_Industry1314’ said: “I appreciate balcony cabins but only when there is some great scenery.”

They said they wouldn’t bother spending the extra money for a cruise which had a lot of days spent on the open ocean.

Another guest said they found an ocean view room to be fine, as they could see the view and save a bit of money.

An ocean view cabin may be the best compromise as guests won’t be stuck in a dark cabin but won’t have to fork out for the most expensive prices either.
