Carnival Corp to reduce carbon footprint by 15% in 2023

Carnival Corp. expects to reduce emission and fuel consumption by 15% this year compared to 2019.

In the company’s annual sustainability report released Wednesday, it said fleet optimizations, energy efficiencies, itinerary efficiency and new technologies all played a part in achieving that reduction, which is measured per available lower berth days.

For instance, the company said it is equipping more ships with air lubrication systems that produce micro bubbles to help ships glide on the ocean with 5% less friction, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The systems have been installed on five ships, with six others in progress and eight on order, Carnival Corp. said.

The company and its nine brands are on track to reach a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, the report said.

If reached, that reduction would bring Carnival much closer to its commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050, a goal CLIA members have committed to try for, although cruise executives say it hinges on the development and availability of alternative fuels.

Carnival said it is continuing to roll out eco-friendly upgrades this year that include LED lights, HVAC automation, variable speed drives on pumps and fans and other upgrades to increase efficiencies. Once completed, these changes will save about 5% in fuel consumption and generate more than $100 million in annual fuel cost savings, Carnival estimates.
