Former U.K. prime minister Theresa May and former U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon head the list of speakers at the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 22nd Global Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, kicking off Nov. 28.

May, the second woman (after Margaret Thatcher) to serve as prime minister, held the position from 2016 to 2019. Last year she was appointed chair of the Aldersgate Group, an alliance that drives action for a sustainable economy.

Ban Ki-Moon, the eighth secretary-general of the U.N. from 2007 to 2016, also served as South Korean foreign minister from 2004 to 2006 and is now deputy chair of the Elders, the human rights organization founded by Nelson Mandela. Ban addressed the audience virtually at the WTTC’s last global summit event, held in Manila last April.

The upcoming summit will be the second the WTTC has hosted this year as it catches up from a pandemic pause: the 2020 was canceled summit due to Covid.

Other speakers and panelists include such government officials and travel industry executives as Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International; Christopher Nassetta, CEO of Hilton; Arnold Donald, former CEO of Carnival Corp. and the current WTTC chair; and J.D. O’Hara, CEO of Internova.

Travel Weekly editor in chief Arnie Weissmann will be moderating two panels at the event.
